MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS HAVE INCREASED TO NEAR 145 MPH…230 KM/HR…WITH HIGHER GUSTS.  PALOMA IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE.  LITTLE CHANGE IN STRENGTH IS FORECAST UNTIL LANDFALL THEN STEADY WEAKENING SHOULD OCCUR FOR THE NEXT DAY OR TWO.
